My Hairloss Treatment Story

March 23rd, 2009

Let me share with you my story.

I am a thirty four year old male. I started losing my hair when I was in my early twenties. In the beginning I didn’t notice (or wanted to accept) that my hair was thinning until one day my friends pointed out to me that I was losing my hair. Only then I decided that I had to do something.

I went to a doctor for help and the doctor prescribed Propecia to me. The doctor did share with me that besides Propecia, Monoxidil are the only two treatment approved by FDA that are researched clinically to be helpful in treatment and prevention of hairloss. He also told me that about 1% of the consumers of Propecia could experience sexual side effects such as erectile dysfunction.

Little did I know I fall into that 1%. I was fortunate that once I stop taking it the sexual side effects were gone (I read online that same less fortunate had the condition permanent). However, here comes the sad part the hair that I gain during treatment were starting to fall off. In a few months, I was again losing hair.

I was in a dilemma, should I gain hair back or lose my manhood. I definitely didn’t want to be lion king without the roar.

My quests lead me to Provillus. Provilus is a hair treatment that comes in an oral supplement (vitamin) form and a topical serum application form. To be effective with Provillus I would suggest that you use both, in particular, the serum. Why?

Remember (earlier in my post I mentioned), besides Propecia that was approved by FDA, Minoxidil is the other treatment that is approved by FDA. And guess what? The active ingredient in Provilus’ topical serum is Minoxidil! For the men’s treatment it contains 5% Monoxidil and for the women’s treatment it contains 2% Monoxidil.

Good Lord was I happy, because Minoxidil does not cause erectile dysfunction when applied. In addition, the oral supplement of Provillus is a natural herbal blend that is taken like vitamins. Provillus definitely suit my needs. What I needed was something to stop hairloss (Monoxidil, the Provillus topical serum) and at the same time make my hair grow healthier and strong (the oral Provilus supplement).

Definitely once bitten, twice shy. I researched not only about the product but also about its contents. Here is what I found, almost all of its ingredients like Vitamin B6, Zinc etc are common minerals and vitamins. The main ingredient saw palmetto was something that I had to research on.

Saw palmetto is extracted from naturally occurring plant, serenoa repens. More commonly saw palmetto is used as a supplement for Prostrate Health. It is suggested that saw palmeto is able to block some effects of testosterone hence, similar to the way Popecia treats hairloss. The possible side effects of saw palmetto are stomach upset (I solved this by taking it with food). For those with stomach, liver, heart, and lung conditions it is definitely not advisable to take saw palmetto. Another of saw palmetto’s side effect is increase or decrease sex drive, however, there is still lack of research data in this area. So far saw palmeto also has seen its uses in bodybuilding supplementation. Hence, I thought it was fine and yes after using it for about two years, I am still well and fine (the lion is still ready to roar!).

There is however, one down side of Provillus. You have to continue using it like I shared with you it is a treatment not a cure. Once you stop you may lose your hair that you gain while using Provillus. Oh yes, just like all hairloss treatments, it takes about three to six months before you can tell the effects.

It took me about into 2 months with religious application of Provillus monoxidil and taking of Provillus supplement before I saw results. Price wise it is definitely cheaper than Propecia or Rogaine (the brand that popularized the use of Monoxidil). It is still somewhat pricey but I understood that I am paying for a special strong blend of supplements and FDA approved treatment. What to do? I am not ready to go bald so soon. I am willing to do what it takes to keep what I have and grow a little if any.

Saw Palmetto an alternative to Propecia?

March 23rd, 2009

Saw palmetto has long been used as a supplement for prostrate health. In recent years it has gain popularity as a supplement for hair loss, in particular, men’s hairloss. This is because of the fact that it is believed that saw palmetto is able to block certain testosterone, hence, preventing hair loss like Propecia does.

However, saw palmeto has not been approved by FDA as a treatment for hairloss. Saw palmetto is currently used as all natural herbal, nutritional supplement for hairloss. FDA currently does not strictly regulate supplements. Big supplement companies such as Procerin and Provillus are some of those companies that strongly believe that saw palmetto is the answer to hairloss.

Saw palmetto is often considered as having similar effectiveness as Propecia but without its side effects (about 1% of Procepia users experience sexual side effects such as erectile dysfunction). Currently there are not enough researches to substantiate this claim. However, users of saw palmeto so far have only complained of stomach discomfort. This could be easily resolved by taking saw palmetto before going to bed or with food. Saw palmeto is not recommended for persons with stomach, heart lungs or blood conditions.

There are many brands of saw palmetto, what a user should look out for are propriety blend of herbal ingredients in it.

Minoxidil the better treatment for Hairloss?

March 23rd, 2009

Till today there are no cure for baldness, there are only treatments for hairloss. Since 1997, FDA has only approved 2 types of treatment known to be effective for hairloss, one of them is Finasteride (an oral treatment marketed under the name Propecia which requires prescription) and the other Minoxidil (an application which does not require prescription).

Usually men and women would rather be using Minoxidil treatment than using Propecia. This is largely believed to be because of the trouble required to visit the doctor, not to mention the emotional and psychological ordeal that one has to endure. In addition, Popecia is only know to be best effective for men and results suggests that it is less effective for women. But what really stops men from trying Propecia are of the fact that 1% of its users suffer from sexual side effects such as erectile dysfunction, breast development and decrease in libido etc.

Hence, Propecia versus Minoxidil, the preferred choice is Minoxidil.

Minoxidil was first used as an oral drug to treat persons with high blood pressure, however, an interesting side effect happened; it seems that Minoxidil was able to slow down balding process. Since then Minoxidil has been marketed under the brand Rogaine or Regaine as a topical application treatment to treat hairloss.

In recent years there are many manufacturers of Minoxidil around. Many of which are a lot cheaper than Rogaine/Regaine, one such brand is Provillus.

To treat hairloss for men the normal dosage is use of 1ml of 5% Minoxidil twice a day. And to treat hairloss in women the normal dosage is 1ml of 2% Minoxidil twice a day. Both Provillus and Rogaine carries 5% Monoxidil for men and 2% Minoxidil for women; the one defining difference between Rogaine and Provilus? Price!

Does Minoxidil have any side effects? As with any drug or medication, yes, there are. The most common is itchy scalp which results in dandruff from the scratching. However, not everyone experiences itchy scalp. Some of the other side effects usually reported are acne, hypotension, fast heartbeat, decrease sexual desire etc, this usually happens when the user exceeds the recommended dosage. Remember for safe use do not exceed the recommended dosage!

Concluding, Minoxidil definitely wins a hand up in the treatment of hairloss for now.
